New Ghost Walk Uncovers Chilling Tales of Weston-super-Mare
24th September 2025
Think you know Weston-super-Mare? Think again.
Lurking in the shadows of our favourite seaside town are tales of ghosts, mysterious goings-on and unexplained happenings – and you can discover it on grisly ghost walk. As night falls and the beachgoers go home, step into a world of ghosts, folklore, and forgotten tales on a spine-tingling walking tour through the town's haunted streets, where history and legend blur in the dark.
From eerie legends to real-life horrors, this is Weston as you've never seen it before - mysterious, macabre, and utterly unforgettable. It is all brought to life by Westonian and actor Joe Brooks on a guided night-time ghost walk through the haunted corners of the town.
“It’s for everyone who loves a good story laced with a bit of mischief,” Joe says. “I’m not trying to prove ghosts exist - I’m just telling the stories. But if we happen to see something strange along the way… all the better!”
A regular on the stage at The Front Room fringe theatre, Joe brings theatrical flair to his storytelling. But these aren’t just performances - many of the tales are rooted in real-life events, strange sightings, and local folklore that has persisted for generations.
The two-hour town centre tour delves into tales both tragic and terrifying. From murder on a shadowy footbridge to magicians in the cellar beneath a pub; And from freak shows on the pier to tales of smugglers and rescue missions at sea which went chillingly wrong.
“It’s ghosts, folklore and gruesome tales all wrapped up in a two-hour walkabout. It’s about the stories and the intrigue – and Weston has got more than its fair share of them,” said Joe.
Arguably Weston’s best known ghost story revolves around the picturesque arch of the Shrubbery footbridge which once led to the Rosa Villa mansion and the old zoo park. It is the scene of the murder of PC Alfred Pavey who sustained catastrophic injuries while trying to apprehend two burglars. He was left battered and beaten and died later – but his spirit is said to live on as his ghost is said to continue to walk his beat.
That story is only one of many and only scratches the surface of Weston after sunset. To find out more about the walks and how to book click here.
