UK Waterski Racing Championships return to Weston-super-Mare
2nd July 2025
If you love white knuckle action that is fast and furious – you are going to love this.
The UK Waterski Racing Championships are returning to Weston-super-Mare on the weekend of the 19th and 20th of July for the first time in seven years.
With four races a day - and the fastest boats in the Formula 2 category capable of hitting speeds of up to 90 miles an hour - this is a spectator event you won’t want to miss.
Event spokesperson Garin Cope said:
“It’s extremely fast action. It’s typical big boy and big girls stuff and excellent to watch.”
What to Expect at the Races
High-Octane Action on the Water
Up to 15 high-powered boats, often as little as two metres apart, will be bouncing across the waves, towing a brave skier standing on a 7ft plank of wood behind them. They’ll battle for clear water, the fastest route, and that all-important top spot.
A Course Designed for Thrills
Overtaking is banned on the corners – to prevent carnage – around a two-mile course that hugs the shoreline, offering fantastic views for spectators.
Where to Watch
Best Viewing Spots
Knightstone Island
The Beach
These are all ideal locations to catch the action – but please note, unless you’re a Pier Card holder, there is a charge to access the Grand Pier.
How the Races Work
Formula 1-Style Start and High-Speed Strategy
The teams will begin just north of Marine Lake in a grid-style mass start, similar to Formula 1. From there, they head toward the Holm Islands, loop into Knightstone Island, race past the Grand Pier to the turn at Black Rock, then repeat the circuit for the duration of the race. Race times range between 25 and 35 minutes, depending on the category.
Behind the Scenes: The Teamwork That Makes It Happen
Each team comprises a driver, an observer, and the skier. The skier, who rides a 7ft board, communicates with the observer to signal whether to increase or decrease speed. They need a straight torso and strong legs to act as shock absorbers as they slice through the surf.
High Stakes in Weston-super-Mare
This is the penultimate round of the championship – meaning every race point counts. Expect fierce competition and no room for error.
Local Heroes and Potential Stars to Cheer On
There’s local interest too:
Jake Frame and Lewis Warboys, both from Weston-super-Mare, will be racing.
World junior champion Sam Hopkins is one to watch in the juniors category.
