About Us
Lent Addresses at Wells Cathedral: '1918-2018: The Conflict that shaped a Century'2018 marks the centenary of the end of World War One, a conflict that shaped the century to come in terms of theology, social practice and world politics. A series of preachers will explore some of these themes in addresses during Lent at Sunday Evensong (3pm) at Wells Cathedral, with tea and a seminar to follow each Sunday.
8th February: Poetry and the Collapse of a Culture
The Revd Canon Rachel Mann, Canon Poet, Manchester Cathedral: Rachel's recent book 'Fierce Imaginings' ranges over the collapse of a culture as witnessed by the poets, soldiers and victims of the Great War. The book has been judged outstanding, and Rachel will offer rich poetry from the period.
25th February: Women in Society
Professor Joy Carter, Vice Chancellor of Winchester University: In the course of the conflict women took an increasingly public role in society, and the century to come became arguably their century, with votes, leadership and an emerging new voice in society.
4th March: God
The Very Revd Professor Martyn Percy, Dean of Christ Church, Oxford: It is often said that God died in the trenches. Certainly traditional images of God came under severe pressure. And through the century follows we have been searching hard for an image of God to attract imaginations.
18th March: Islam
The Revd Canon Professor David Thomas, Birmingham University: The allied victory of 1918 led directly to the collapse of the Ottoman empire – and the long search for a settled pattern of Islamic government; the turmoil still affects our world today.
More details are available on the Cathedral's website at www.wellscathedral.org.uk. All welcome; no need to book!
