About Us
It once housed the infamous Kray twins - and is now one of the south west's best-loved but most chilling tourist attractions. Shepton Mallet Prison is day-out you will never forget.
Until it closed in 2013, Shepton Mallet Prison was Britain's oldest working prison, housing some of the most feared prisoners in the country, and now you can see and experience what it was like to be locked up there.
You will go onto the wings, step into the cells, walk in the exercise yard and visit the execution area from which there was no return. You will see the governor's room, the hard labour yard and learn all about slopping out.
This is no sanitised experience. Mould still clings to the walls of cells. It is so authentic that the jail has starred as the backdrop for so many films and television dramas.
The prison has been home to thousands of convicts since it first opened its heavy doors in 1610 and became one of the most feared in the country.
It held lifers, murderers and even the Kray twins in the 1950s. It was also used as a Military prison by the US during the war and is also known as the UK's most haunted prison.
The museum is open daily and you can do a guided tour - which is well worth the extra money - or you can go around on your own. Guided tours are run at weekends, Bank Holidays and weekdays during school holidays.
Even though it is less than an hour from Weston, you can stay the night and be locked up in one of the cells if you dare!
There are also ghost walks and escape rooms.
