Weston RNLI Water Safety Day

About Us

The RNLI has a declared intention to reduce the number of drownings which occur each year in the coasts around the UK. Much of this must come from education. One of their particular targets is children. This is particularly important in Weston-super-Mare where the very rapid rise in tides and the very strong currents can easily catch littles one out.

To help with this the Weston RNLI volunteers have combined with the Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and the local Coastguard Service to hold a sea safety day at the lifeboat station at Knightstone on the Weston sea front.

This event, running from 1000 to 1500 will include demonstrations and talks on how to enjoy the seaside safely. There will be the opportunity to see lifesaving equipment and if you are a boat owner have your...Read More

This event, running from 1000 to 1500 will include demonstrations and talks on how to enjoy the seaside safely. There will be the opportunity to see lifesaving equipment and if you are a boat owner have your own gear checked.

The Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service hovercraft Firefly, will be there to inspect as will the Weston RNLI lifeboats and the Coastguard rescue equipment. As well as talking to the crews of the rescue services here will be the opportunity to throw wet sponges at the lifeboatmen as in the enclosed picture. All children are welcome and we encourage parents to bring their children to this event to help them learn how to keep safe.

Charlotte Conroy, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Weston said. We are very keen to help show parents and their children how to enjoy our wonderful town and its seaside safely. The day will be fun for all but we hope it will also be a time to learn to respect the water.'
