About Us
Join us for a relaxed, inspiring afternoon of music, stories, and connection with kirtan leader Tim Chalice.
Kirtan is the practice of singing mantras—an ancient form of Bhakti Yoga, the Yoga of the Heart. Unlike other yoga styles that focus on movement and breathwork, Bhakti Yoga is all about devotion and sound. Through singing the mantras, we tap into something deep within ourselves—something joyful, meditative, and transformative.
Whether you are new to kirtan or an experienced practitioner, this is suitable for you.
In this workshop, Tim blends music, storytelling to bring kirtan to life. He'll share his personal journey with Bhakti Yoga, the rich mythology behind the mantras, and the meaning of the Sanskrit words we sing. He'll also talk about the inspiration behind his own original kirtan music.
You're welcome to sing along, or simply sit back and listen. Either way, it's an experience that goes beyond words.
What to Expect
Kirtan is simple, accessible, and profoundly powerful. The mantras are short—usually just one line, repeated with an uplifting melody for about 10-15 minutes. The repetition helps quiet the mind and open the heart. With the harmonium, tabla, and other instruments guiding the rhythm, the experience becomes meditative, immersive, and deeply moving.
Chanting affects us on every level—physically, mentally, and emotionally. It slows the breath, calms the nervous system, and shifts brainwave patterns to a more relaxed state. Over time, regular practice can help reduce stress, improve focus, and support overall well-being.
As kirtan artist Jai Uttal beautifully says:
"Kirtan is for all people. There are no experts, no beginners. The practice itself is the teacher, guiding us to ourselves. Kirtan allows us to enter into a world where all the logic of our minds, and all of the conditioning are left aside. With Kirtan, we create a temple inside the altar of our hearts, a place of refuge, a place of love, and a place of just being."
