About Us
Following the huge success of ‘The Sound of Music’, WODS Musical Theatre Company gives you the chance to relish the darker side of musical theatre with the shocking tale of ‘Jack the Ripper’. Don’t be put off by the title; this is a musical comedy drama not a horror, with an atmospheric commentary as opposed to an historical re-enactment, of the incidents surrounding the gruesome Whitechapel murders which took place in the Autumn of 1888.This gripping story is both entertaining and thought provoking. The tension and mystery of the drama is maintained throughout with a clever shift between reality and artificiality, with characters representing ‘real’ people as well as members of the music hall audience and players; this keeps the action moving in an energetic, thrilling and witty performance.
The haunting music will transport you to the East End of London with rousing dance hall numbers such as ‘Saturday Night’ and the lilting sultry rhythms of ‘Goodbye Day’. Dark humour and the light and shade of human characters bring this chilling piece of history to life.
Newcomer to the society, Warren Ingham-Barrow, gives an outstanding performance as the evangelical ‘Chairman’, which contrasts perfectly with the spine-tingling menace of Dave Bailey’s ‘Druitt’. Kate Emmery’s eloquent portrayal of ‘Marie’ gives an insight into the hardship of her life and Bev Priest delivers yet another perfect characterisation in the dual role of the tart ‘Lizzie’ and ‘Queen Victoria’. With a wealth of other parts and fantastic chorus numbers, this is a perfect show for the extremely talented WODS cast.
