It's fast, it's furious and it's octane-fuelled. Speedway bikes have no brakes, just one gear, a clutch and 500cc engine that canaccelerate to 60mph, faster than a Formula 1 car. The riders race around oval circuits and to get around the tight corners at high speed the riders actually have to accelerate to bring the rear wheel out and skid around the course. Our partners Somerset Speedway are regarded throughout the sport as one of THE best racing strips in the country, the Highbridge-based Oak Tree Arena is the perfect place to watch thrill-a-minute speedway racing over 15 heats, operating most Wednesday nights between April and October. With hot food outlets, a clubhouse with licensed bar and a track shop offering a range of speedway merchandise, the Oaktree provides an ideal place for the whole family who are looking for a night out with a difference. Up to 30 minutes prior to racing the riders' pits area are open to the public where fans can see the bikes being 'set-up' for the meeting, speak to the riders and obtain autographs before the 'gladiators' get themselves into the zone for the racing action, starting at 7.30pm.
