SEE MONSTER

So it's farewell to SEE Monster, it closed on 20th November 2022 and was arguably Weston’s biggest and most talked about tourist attraction in years.

Weighing in at 450 tonnes, that is the equivalent to 65 African Elephants or three Blue Whales, the SEE Monster – a retired North Sea platform – emerged from the sea with a fascinating back story.

Part of See Monster's story was to get people talking about the issues of re-use, re-purposing and recycling. The final chapter of its sojourn in Weston-super-Mare will be to witness it being dismantled and recycled.   Even though the See Monster has now entered its second retirement, you can still watch its story here

On the garden deck you were able to see at first-hand how the wind and the sun's energy can be captured and turned into green energy.

The structure showed where art can meet science. Ever since it emerged from the sea on a giant barge the size of a football pitch, the 35-metre tall Monster – that’s the equivalent of eight double decker buses stacked on top of one another –  towered over the town dominating the shoreline and conversation. 

The spectacular garden in the sky featured almost 1,000 trees and plants, all of which will be replanted in Weston-super-Mare.

UNBOXED 2022 - Creativity in the UK

See Monster was one of the ten government funded creations which formed UNBOXED 2022. The festival is taking place across the UK and online with some of the creations continuing beyond the lifespan of See Monster. 

Leaving a legacy

This project has already inspired a series of wrap around projects and events which have been generated by the community of Weston-super-Mare. These events will showcase the town's creativity and will be themed around STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths). From fashion shows to photography exhibitions, the Weston Presents programme from Culture Weston and What's Next from the Tropicana have it all.
