Weston-super-Mare is the place to come for your summer sunshine fun because no matter how hot it gets this season there will always be room on the beach for you.
With its massive bay and miles of sand you won’t have to worry about finding space to lay down your towels or set up your deckchairs. Whether it’s lazing about on the beach with a good book, making sandcastles or chasing around with a bat and ball, nothing makes for lasting family memories better than a good old day out at the seaside. And Weston has the lot.
With donkey rides, a pier packed with funfair rides and attractions as well as a plethora of seafront pubs and restaurants, Weston has all you need for that day, week or fortnight in the sun.
Donkey rides have been part of the Weston tradition for well….donkey’s years. And the family that have been bringing them to the beach and putting smiles on children’s faces have been in the donkey rides business since 1886.
The beach also has swing boats, bouncy castles and volleyball nets while, at the north end, you will find the Marine Lake, a lovely artificially maintained cove, where people can safely swim in the saltwater on the shore-side of the attractive causeway even when the tide is a long way out.
Younger children may prefer to cool off at the Water Adventure Park which is just the other side of Marine Lake. The splash pad is guaranteed to produce shrieks of delight from children as they try to dodge the fountains and sprays which are triggered by sensors and buttons. There is loads for children to do and it’s not all water-based with play apparatus, a castle with drawbridge, a slide, rope swings, see-saws and more. And with a price of just £2.50 for the lot it will put just as big a smile on the faces of parents and grandparents as well.
Weston is all about having fun with the family and when you’ve finished making sandcastles of your own why not head along the beach to the see how the experts do it at the sand sculpture festival? The theme changes every year but the quality of their creations doesn’t and you will be left in awe at how they do it.
There are plenty of places along the seafront to stop off at and have a bite to eat or something to drink unless, of course, you’ve brought along your own picnic. If that’s the case, what could be better than to take advantage of the special car parking areas on the actual beach itself where you can simply drive on, open your boot, lift out your hamper full of goodies, and have your picnic right there without having to lug it for miles.
After lunch you may feel like walking some of it off. Weston-super-Mare has a magnificent wide and long promenade which is enjoyed by walkers, roller-bladers and cyclists alike and it’s a great place to watch the world go by or to simply look out across to Wales which on most days is clearly visible past the islands of Flat Holm and Steep Holm. If you prefer something more strenuous for your after-lunch-walk then head to Uphill. There are several walks there that you can tailor-make as long or as short as you like. If you’re energetic enough for the short but steep climb out of the village to the roofless church and nearby viewing tower, you will be rewarded with some of the best views the region has to offer. You will look down onto the marina which has a lovely café and also onto the start of the Brean Down Way which provides some fine walking options on wheelchair-friendly paths even if you only want to tackle a tiny section of its eight-mile course.
