Weston-super-Mare sand sculpture festival 2019 What If Visit Weston

The resort of Weston-super-Mare is a hugely popular tourist destination, drawing over 5 million visitors annually from all over the UK to it’s miles of sandy beaches and attractions such as the the newly renovated Grand Pier, the world’s largest Helicopter Museum, the Weston Wheel. For the past years, this seaside resort has also been building a reputation for one of the most unique summer festivals anywhere in the UK – the “Weston-super-Mare Sand Sculpture Festival”.

Since 2006, the festival has grown from a single sculpture to a hugely anticipated international event, earning Weston the title of “Sand Sculpting Capital” of the UK.
In that time the festival has entertained, excited and inspired over 500,000 visitors and this year will be no exception with the addition of special events, activities and opportunities for visitors to get involved and create their very own works of sand art.

We began 2019, perhaps like many others, with a question mark! There were lots of ‘what-ifs’ and uncertain ideas, as seems to be catching in this current political climate.  We all have questions without answers, curious about where the future could take us. Eureka! Along came the Weston Super Mare Sand Sculpture Festival’s light-bulb moment. What if this year’s sand sculpture theme was… WHAT IF?

WHAT IF … buildings were made of jelly?
WHAT IF … Donald Trump were Mexican?
WHAT IF … Dinosaurs returned?
WHAT IF … you were the only person on earth?

This year every sculpture will address a different question, from the obvious to the obscure, the past to the present and the desirable to the devastating.  This year we want to open your imagination, and we’re sure that we will.  With our usual array of activities you will get the opportunity to ask your own questions and vote for your favourite answers.

What if... you paid us a visit?
This years sand sculpture festival has kicked off with a bang. In april 20 sculptors from 9 different countries arrived in Weston super Mare. Armed with shovels, trowels and an array of specialist tools they hit the beach and began turning 5000 tonnes of Weston’s glorious beach sand into what we have been told are the most controversial and honest sculptures in the event’s history.
This year’s theme is “What If?” and is exhibiting interpretations of the hypothetical question from many different angles. Not only will they be pricking our conscience and provoking lively conversation but they will also allow us to interact with the pieces, learn about their intricate process and even have a go at crafting them ourselves. The public also has the important job of voting for a winner!
The festival is open daily from 10AM to 6PM until the end of September 2019. What are you waiting for? See you on the beach!
From April 19th till the end of September 2019 we will display a new exhibition of sculptures entirely made out of sand!
