There’s nothing better than a carefree day out with your dog where you don’t have to worry whether your four-legged friend will be welcome too. Luckily, Weston-super-Mare is one of the most dog-friendly destinations in the UK, with beaches, parks, cafés, pubs and places to stay all ready to roll out the welcome mat for your pooch.

Few things beat a seaside stroll with your dog, and Weston-super-Mare’s vast sandy beach gives you plenty of room to explore, play and relax together.

Dogs are welcome on large sections of the beach throughout the year, although some seasonal restrictions do apply. See the map below.

  • Between the Grand Pier and Marine Lake

Dogs Not Permitted: 1 May – 30 September (9am–7pm)

A hidden gem just south of Weston-super-Mare, Uphill Beach is dog friendly all year round and ideal for quieter walks away from the crowds. Nearby Uphill Nature Reserve offers even more opportunities for adventurous dogs and owners to explore together.

You may occasionally spot blokarting or wind sports taking place on part of the beach.

With sweeping sands, dunes and stunning coastal views, Sand Bay is another fantastic year-round dog friendly beach near Weston-super-Mare.

Walk along the dunes towards Sand Point and Middle Hope, or combine your trip with nearby Weston Woods for an even bigger adventure. Afterwards, stop by Sandy Bay Tea Room, where dogs can even enjoy a Doggy Afternoon Cream made with rich beef stock.

Please note that horse riding sometimes takes place on the beach.

While dogs are not permitted on Clevedon Beach or Marine Lake, Clevedon’s promenade offers a beautiful coastal walk with views across the Bristol Channel and the historic pier.

For longer adventures, explore Lovers’ Walk, Layde Bay or even follow the coast path towards Portishead.

From Portishead Marina to the beach and promenade, there are plenty of interesting sights and smells to keep curious dogs entertained. The walk between the town’s two lighthouses is especially scenic.

Dogs should be kept on leads along Portishead Promenade.

Not every dog dreams of sandy paws. If you and your pup prefer woodland trails, open green spaces or peaceful parks, Weston-super-Mare has plenty of options.

Stretching across 130 hectares, Weston Woods offers beautiful walking trails, stunning views over Weston Bay and Sand Bay, plus an incredible variety of flora and fauna.

You can even discover an Iron Age hillfort hidden within the woods, making this a brilliant walk for both nature lovers and history fans.

Located near the southern end of Weston beach, Clarence Park is perfect for combining a seaside stroll with some park time.

The park is split into two sections:

  • Off-lead walking is permitted in the section furthest from the beach
  • Dogs should remain on leads near The Clarence café

(Trust us – once you spot the squirrels, you’ll understand why.)

With winding pathways, open green space and seasonal refreshments available from the café, Ashcombe Park is a popular spot for relaxed dog walks.

Dogs can enjoy off-lead exercise throughout most of the park, except within fenced play areas.

Close to the Italian Gardens, Grove Park is a peaceful and colourful green space filled with flower beds, a traditional bandstand and even a bug hotel.

Dogs are welcome but should remain on leads throughout the park.

After all those walkies, both you and your dog deserve somewhere comfortable to relax.
