Weston-super-Mare

A large group of swimmers walking out to sea at Weston-super-Mare, Somerset

When you think of beaches and coastal resorts, you think of swimming and in Weston-super-Mare it is a way of life for some.

Where to wild swim, sea dip, and enjoy the water on the Somerset coast

If you’re wondering whether you can swim in Weston-super-Mare, the answer is yes – you just need to know where to go.

Thanks to one of the highest tidal ranges in the world, the sea here can retreat dramatically, leaving wide stretches of sand behind. But at Marine Lake, at the northern end of the seafront, the water stays in, making it one of the best places for swimming in Weston-super-Mare, whatever the tide is doing.

On any given day, you’ll find people taking a quiet dip, enjoying a gentle swim, or simply soaking up the sea air.

Sea Swimming in Weston-super-Mare

For those looking for something a little more adventurous, sea swimming is a growing part of life in Weston.

Along the coastline near Birnbeck Pier and the rocky beaches beyond, experienced swimmers head into open water—often early in the morning or at sunset, when the light and atmosphere make the experience even more memorable.

Meet the Supermares: Weston’s Sea Swimming Community

And it’s here you’ll often spot the Supermares: Weston’s famously friendly community of sea swimmers and dippers.

United by a love of the sea, fresh air and a good laugh, they meet throughout the day and evening, all year round. Anyone is welcome to join them – whether for a one-off dip or something more regular.

You’ll find swimmers of all abilities – some heading out for a proper swim, others simply enjoying a paddle and a chat.

It’s not about endurance or bravado. It’s about feeling good, meeting people and doing something a little different.

Of course, some members like to take things a step further with sea swims by the pier or on the rocky beach between Marine Lake and Birnbeck Pier…

Meet The diehards taking the plunge

It’s 4am. Your alarm goes off. There are still hours before work. Do you roll over and go back to sleep – or grab your towel and head for the beach?

For Christopher Hawley, the answer is simple.

“I can’t explain why I do it,” he says. “To everybody else – my wife included – it sounds pretty mad. And I used to think the same.”

Introduced by a friend, one swim quickly became a habit – and then something more.

“Now it’s not really a hobby anymore. It’s a way of life. We’re always checking tide times, messaging each other, seeing who’s going. Once you’ve said you’re in, you don’t want to back out.”

And it’s not really about how long you’re in the water.

“You might only be in for three or four minutes. But when you come out, you’re laughing, huddled together with a flask, chatting away. It’s that sense of achievement — and the people. It’s like a second family.”

Why try cold water swimming in Weston?

Cold-water swimming is often linked to benefits like reduced stress and improved mood – but in Weston, it’s just as much about community and shared experience.

“You’re there in the dark, maybe just a couple of you near the pier, waves crashing – and the rest of the town is asleep,” Christopher says. “It feels special. Like you’re part of something different.”

In summer, swims can stretch to 15–20 minutes as the water warms. In winter, it’s shorter, sharper – and, for many, even more rewarding.

There are around 1,000 members in the Supermares community, with a core group of regular dippers and many more joining for special events – from solstice swims and Halloween fancy dress dips to the ever-popular Christmas Day plunge.

Whether it’s a sunrise sea swim or a more sheltered dip at Marine Lake, there’s always a way to get in the water.
