2016 Year of the English Garden Trails

Weston and Somerset are in bloom to celebrate the 2016 Year of the English Garden

To mark the 300th anniversary of ‘Capability’ Brown and in celebration of England’s many fabulous gardens, landscapes and events, VisitEngland is promoting ‘Year of the English Garden’ in 2016.

You may think that Weston-super-Mare is just a traditional Victorian seaside resort, and we don’t have much to offer in terms of all things floral, but you might be pleasantly surprised….

Take a leisurely stroll not too far away from the seafront and you will find many of our parks and gardens that offer beautiful seasonal floral displays all year round.

And did you know, that at an award evening in Sunderland back in October it was announced that Weston-super-Mare had won Silver Gilt in their National Entry. This is just one below Gold and a fantastic result for the town!  Weston in Bloom also received Gold for the 4th year in a row in their Regional Entry making this the most successful year yet for In Bloom.

We have been out and about in Weston-super-Mare and our county of Somerset to devise two floral trails for you to enjoy that showcase what we think are the best blooms to see in the area.

The Weston trail is a circular trail that starts and ends at the seafront.  Depending on how long you wish to spend at each site, this could take anything between an hour and a half, or a whole day.  Its flat route means that it is easily accessible to those who may be in wheelchairs, pushchairs and prams or use mobility aids – we wanted this to be something that everyone can enjoy.  There are also lots of places to stop and rest.

It takes in some of our parks and open spaces, the High Street, and even one of our local primary schools who pride themselves on having a glorious front garden.

Also on the map you will see some additional sites that are easy to reach if you have transport, which include Weston Woods.

On the Somerset trail, not only does it involves particular floral sites, such as The Walled gardens of Cannington and The Bishop’s Palace and Gardens, but we have tried to take you on a route through pretty Somerset villages too.  For this trail you will need transport and if you wish to complete it, you will definitely need a few days to take everything in whilst you explore our glorious county.
