If you’ve only got a short time in Weston-super-Mare you can follow our Magnificent Seven guide to help you spend a fun-filled seven hours by the seaside.
A visit to Weston would not be complete without a visit to the famous Grand Pier which dominates the seafront. At the end of the quarter-of-a-mile boardwalk there is an indoor funfair where thrill-seekers can buckle up for a ride on what is believed to be Britain’s smallest rollercoaster. But don’t underestimate it. What the Robocoaster lacks in size it makes up for in thrills and is not for the fainthearted! As well as the traditional rides, there’s also go-karts a laser maze to navigate, a freefall experience, a maze of mirrors to try and escape from, hundreds of arcade games as well as places to eat, drink and be entertained.
We all remember those family holidays making sand castles with our buckets and spades – well now you can see how the professionals do it. For the last 13 years Weston-Super-Mare has been home to the spectacular Sand Sculpture Exhibition. It has a different theme each year and this season, 2019, it is all about the concept of 'What if?' It’s an unbelievable display of craftmanship and what’s more at the end of the day there aren’t any mean big boys to come along and smash up the designs!
See Weston from the air by taking a ride on the seafront ferris wheel for an unrivalled bird’s eye view of the town and all its attractions. The 40-metre-high attraction looks a lot higher from the top than it does from the ground and offers spectacular views as far as up to 20 miles away on a clear day. The sky wheel is open from Easter to September and riders travel in viewing pods under canopy roofs.
You don’t have to be Rory McIlroy to enjoy a game of crazy golf. This is a game for everyone. The silly fun holes are a great leveller where children and grandparents have just as much chance of winning as a top handicap golfer. Either way, it’s fun and laughter guaranteed and you’ll still be talking about your hole-in-one or near miss on the way home. There are a couple of courses on the sea front to be enjoyed and while it may not exactly be links golf getting the ball past the obstacles and in the hole can be just as challenging!
With so many other exciting attractions in Weston, it would be easy to get sidetracked and ignore Weston’s biggest natural attraction – its glorious beach. With miles of sand, there is plenty of room for everyone to pitch up and claim their own particular space for the day. Whether it’s donkey riding, lazing in the sun, sandcastle making or a game of bat and ball that you are after it is all there to be enjoyed. Of course, regular visitors to Weston will know that the tide can sometimes be quite a long way out so we’ve thought of that as well and the Marine Lake at the north end provides the perfect sandy swimming and paddling beach without you having to walk out too far to dip your toe into the water. Meanwhile, at the south end of the beach, you can sit back on your deckchair and marvel at the speed and skills of the kite surfers provided there is enough breeze for them to take to the water.
Imagine your kids’ excitement as you turn up in Weston for a seaside day out and park your vehicle on the sand. What could be more thrilling for the children than to tell their friends that mummy and daddy drove the car right onto the sand. It’s also super-convenient; on very busy days when seafront parking is at capacity, you can unload your picnic hamper and tuck in to your sarnies right next to your car without having to lug it for miles.
You can leave your car on the beach at the south end of town but only as directed by parking attendants. It’s the same price as promenade parking but you will need to observe the tide time times which are advertised on the signs….or otherwise you could risk your car becoming a submarine (and you thought pet hair, crumbs and sticky fingers were a nightmare on the upholstery!)
If, after all that lot, you’ve still got some time and energy left, then why not head for one of the town’s museums. Head for the Weston Museum where you can even try on a swimming cap like the one worn by the town’s four-time Olympic gold medal winner Paulo Radmilovic. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, there’s the town’s Lambretta scooter museum, although it is best to check first for opening hours, or the town’s Helicopter Museum which houses the world’s largest helicopter collection. If you are planning on visiting the helicopter museum, it’s best to do it at the start or end of your visit to Weston as it is on the outskirts of the town en route to the motorway.
