  • Weston-super-Mare Carnival parade
  • Christmas lights switch-on and lantern procession
  • Fireworks at Sea over the Bristol Channel

Friday: Weston-super-Mare Carnival Parade

For one magical night every November, Weston-super-Mare transforms into the Westcountry’s answer to Rio. The streets pulse with colour, light, and music as crowds gather from all across England to witness one of the country’s most spectacular carnival parades.

From the moment the first illuminated cart glides into view, the town hums with excitement. Towering and intricate, these aren’t just floats (Don’t make the mistake of calling them that in front of the locals) – they’re moving masterpieces. Some stretch over 100 feet, adorned with thousands of dazzling bulbs and intricate moving parts.

Dragons breathe fire. Fairytales leap into life. Pop-culture icons dominate the night sky. Each cart is the result of months of secret planning, painstaking craftsmanship, and fierce rivalry between carnival clubs, driving each display to be bigger, brighter, and more ambitious than the last.

This is a carnival that must be seen to be believed. And, after it ends, the town continues to buzz, with pubs and bars keeping the celebrations alive into the night.

Saturday: Christmas Lights Switch-On in Weston-super-Mare

Morning comes gently after the excitement of carnival night. There’s time for a relaxed stroll along the promenade, a coffee by the sea, and a moment to take in the crisp November air.

As afternoon turns to evening, the magic begins again. In the Italian Gardens, lanterns glow softly as families gather, and a much-loved local character takes centre stage – a Weston seaside donkey – leading the procession to the giant Christmas tree.

The crowd joins in carols as the Christmas tree lights up, filling the gardens with a warm, festive glow. It’s charming, atmospheric, and unmistakably seasonal.

Sunday: Fireworks at Sea, Weston-super-Mare

As darkness falls, attention shifts to the seafront. Visitors gather along the promenade to watch the spectacular Fireworks at Sea display.

Bursts of colour and light dance over the bay creating a breathtaking finale to the weekend. For an even closer view, the Grand Pier offers front-row tickets, with rides and amusements adding to the experience.

Whether on the pier or along the shoreline, the fireworks cap a weekend of magic, energy, and unforgettable moments by the coast.

Make a weekend of it

With so much happening across three days, this isn’t a visit to rush.

Stay overnight, explore between events, and let the pace shift between high-energy spectacle and quieter coastal moments. Weston-super-Mare in winter has a rhythm of its own, and this is when it’s at its most memorable.

Can’t make November? There’s more winter magic to come…

If you can’t make this November spectacular, Weston-super-Mare has another unforgettable treat in December.

The Christmas Vee Dub parade is unlike anything you’ve seen before. Around 150 Volkswagen vehicles roll into town, each transformed into a glowing festive masterpiece. Classic campers and quirky cars sparkle with up to 35,000 twinkling fairy lights while Santas and elves take their place on the roof.

It’s fun, feel-good, and completely unique – a perfect reason to wrap up warm, head to the coast, and make a night or a weekend of it.
