If you’re planning a seaside break – or even just passing through on your way to Devon or Cornwall – make sure you stop in Weston-super-Mare, where creativity bursts from every corner.
More details
This vibrant coastal town has quietly transformed itself into one of the country’s most exciting open-air galleries. Here, towering murals, playful illustrations, and awe-inspiring large-scale artworks turn everyday streets into an immersive cultural experience. It’s bold, it’s unexpected – and it’s completely free.
Whether you’ve got a full weekend to explore or just a couple of hours to spare, Weston-super-Mare offers a creative hit you won’t find anywhere else along the coast.
A Walk Like No Other
Following Weston’s street art trail is like stepping into a living gallery – only this one stretches across the entire town.
Around one corner, a giant cockerel watches over the streets below. Turn another, and you’ll find Weston’s much-loved donkeys immortalised high above a building. Elsewhere, a huge shark appears to break out of the sea and lunge at a restaurant, while surreal sea life scenes transform walls into underwater worlds.
Look a little closer and you’ll spot the humour woven into the artwork too. A mural of Spiderman is paired with the line “I bet this ends up on the web”, while a portrait of boxerFloyd Mayweather comes with the perfectly judged caption “this graffiti may weather.” It’s clever, playful, and brilliantly unexpected.
And then there are the moments that stop you in your tracks – the sheer scale, the detail, the way a piece seems to come alive the longer you look. And, some do. Look at one with 3D glasses and it’s totally different to seeing it without.
From Napkin Sketch to Landmark Mural
Some of Weston’s most striking pieces have the most surprising beginnings.
One of the town’s standout murals – a stunning sea life scene filled with seals and flowing florals – started life as a quick sketch on the back of a napkin. Artist Curtis Hylton came up with the idea on a train journey to Weston, before transforming that spontaneous doodle into a breathtaking large-scale artwork that now brightens the town all year round.
It’s a perfect example of what makes Weston’s street art so special: big ideas, bold creativity, and stories behind every wall.
The Festival That Keeps It Growing
At the heart of it all is the Weston Wallz Festival – the driving force behind Weston’s ever-expanding outdoor gallery.
Running from 17-26 July 2026, the festival will see around 20 new walls across the town transformed by some of the UK and Europe’s most talented street artists. For visitors, it’s a rare chance to watch these works come to life in real time – raw creativity unfolding on a monumental scale.
But the magic doesn’t end when the festival does. Each new piece becomes part of the town’s permanent collection, meaning there’s always something new to discover whenever you visit.
Meet the Artists Behind the Walls
Behind every mural is a story – and sometimes, a surprising amount of pressure.
Internationally renowned artist Dale Grimshaw knows that feeling well. Despite painting breathtaking murals across Europe and beyond, he still feels the nerves every time he faces a blank wall.
“The longer the wall stays empty, the higher the stress,” he says.
Known for his striking, photorealistic portraits layered with bold colour and cultural depth, Grimshaw approaches each mural with meticulous planning. For him, creating street art in public is like hosting a dinner party – there’s anticipation, pressure, and the desire to deliver something unforgettable.
But when it all comes together, that pressure turns into something else entirely.
“When the wall’s going well, you feel alive,” he says. “It’s like performing live.”
Visitors to Weston Wallz get to witness that transformation first-hand – the moment a blank surface becomes a powerful work of art.
See It Happen: Spray Jam Weekend
For a front-row seat to the action, head to the Italian Gardens during the festival’s Spray Jam weekend (25–26 July 2026, 10am–6pm).
Here, artists create vibrant pieces live on giant canvases, filling the space with colour, energy, and creativity. It’s fast-paced, immersive, and completely captivating.
Even More to Discover
As you explore, keep an eye out for the brilliantly witty JPS Art Trail, where illustrations and clever captions add another layer of personality to the town.
And yes – Banksy has left his mark here too. His iconic pinwheel artwork is currently on display at Weston Museum, making it a must-see stop on your art-filled wander.
A Seaside Town with a Creative Edge
Weston-super-Mare’s artistic story has been building for years. The town captured global attention with Dismaland – a bold and thought-provoking pop-up experience that drew over 150,000 visitors in just five weeks and featured artists including Damien Hirst.
More recently, it hosted the awe-inspiring SEE Monster, a colossal repurposed North Sea platform turned public artwork – further cementing Weston’s reputation as a place where creativity thrives on a grand scale.
