Visit weston’s most curious landmark: The Carrot
Locally nicknamed “the Carrot” (or “the Parsnip,” depending on who you ask), this 30-metre spire is one of the town’s most talked-about landmarks – and easily its most debated.
A tower that changes with the light
The carrot is a quirky must-see sight in Weston-super-Mare. Love it or not, you certainly won’t ignore it. It’s a combination of curiosity, art, light and information hub all rolled into one and is most definitely a BIG local talking point.
More details
By day, the Silica stands tall at the heart of Weston — a bold, slightly mysterious structure that sparks curiosity. In recent years it has been re-purposed to include digital interactive visitor information screens at its base.
By night, the tower transforms. Its 6,000 glass prisms illuminate in shifting colours, turning the spire into a glowing beacon that represents sand, sea and light — the natural elements that define Weston-super-Mare.
It’s at this point that most sceptics start to come around.
Art, function… and a bit of controversy.
Designed by artists Wolfgang Buttress and Fiona Heron, the Silica was created in 2006 as a multi-purpose space — combining public art, a bus shelter and an information point.

Local insight
Some call it a carrot. Others insist it’s a parsnip.
Either way, the Silica – to give it its proper name – has become a true local icon sparking debate, curiosity and the occasional laugh.
Weston’s answer to the Eiffel Tower?
Maybe. Just… considerably shorter and a lot more vegetable-shaped!!
Top tip
Visit at dusk to see the lights come to life – it’s when the Silica is at its most impressive and most photogenic.
