A cycle route we’ve tested ourselves
At Visit Weston, we don’t just recommend things to do – we experience them first-hand. After riding the Pier to Pier Way shortly after it opened, we can confidently say it’s one of the best bike rides in Somerset.
Expect a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere with cyclists of all abilities – from families and casual riders to more experienced cyclists – all enjoying the route at their own pace.
What to expect on the route
Starting on Weston-super-Mare’s seafront, the route follows the promenade before heading towards Kewstoke, where you’ll enjoy coastal views and glimpses of Birnbeck Pier.
A short section on a busier road as you ride along the Old Toll Road from Weston to Kewstoke – with Weston Woods on your right and the sea on your left – requires a little extra care, but the majority of the route is on quiet country lanes and low-traffic roads, making it ideal for leisure cycling.
As you pass through Kewstoke, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over Sand Bay – a highlight of this Somerset coastal bike ride. From here, the route continues inland through peaceful countryside.
A dedicated off-road section crosses the River Yeo, offering a more traffic-free cycling experience and the chance to spot local wildlife along the way.
Great stops along the way
Halfway along the route, the Owl in the Oak café is a popular stop for cyclists. Whether you’re after coffee, cake or a quick rest, it’s the perfect place to recharge before continuing your ride.
You can also extend your journey with optional loops to Sand Bay or Kingston Seymour, making this a flexible and easy cycling route to customise.
One of the best coastal cycle routes in the South west
As you approach Clevedon, take the off-road coastal option along the sea wall at Marshall’s Field. This stretch is a real highlight, offering uninterrupted views across the Bristol Channel towards Wales.
It’s this combination of sea views, open landscapes and quiet riding that makes the Pier to Pier Way one of the best coastal cycle routes in the South West.
